Infographics People Actually Read: An AI Prompt Guide

I made a lot of bad infographics before I made a good one. A client says "can you do something that shows the numbers," you open a blank artboard, and forty minutes later there are twelve icons, four competing colors and no hierarchy at all. Sound familiar? The reason I care about AI infographic prompts now is not really speed. It is that writing the prompt forces me to decide what the graphic is actually saying before I draw a single box.

That shift changed my output more than any tool ever did.

ChatGPT's image model got a serious upgrade in April 2026 with Images 2.0, and the part that matters here is text. English text rendering now lands around 99% accurate, and the model reasons about layout before it renders. Two years ago that sentence would have been science fiction. Today it means an infographic with real labels, real headlines and real numbers is a reasonable thing to ask for.

But most people are still prompting this wrong.

Why most AI infographics come out unreadable

Here is the pattern I see constantly. Someone types "create an infographic about email marketing statistics" and gets back a dense wall of shapes, half-invented numbers and eight icons fighting for attention. Then they blame the model.

The model is not the problem. The prompt asked for a topic, not a layout.

An infographic is a design object with rules. It has a fixed number of data points, a reading order, a dominant element and a lot of empty space doing quiet work. When you skip all of that and hand over a subject line, you are asking the model to make roughly forty design decisions on your behalf. It will make them. You just will not like most of them.

The other thing nobody tells you: an image model does not calculate. It renders what you tell it. So the numbers in your prompt have to be numbers you already trust, written out exactly. Never let it invent a statistic. That is your job, and honestly it always was.

The five parts every infographic prompt needs

Every prompt I use on paid work has the same skeleton. I stopped improvising years ago.

1. Format. Vertical scroll graphic, square social card, horizontal one-pager, printed A4. Say it first. The format decides everything downstream.

2. Hierarchy. Name the one element that should be biggest, then the supporting layer, then the small stuff. "One oversized headline, three stat cards below it, a small footer line." That single sentence does more work than any style adjective.

3. Exact text in quotes. This is the big one. Put every word you want rendered inside quotation marks in your prompt. Unquoted text reads as a suggestion. Quoted text reads as an instruction, and the model treats it that way.

4. Palette, limited on purpose. Two neutrals plus one accent. Not five brand colors. Not "vibrant and colorful." If you give it a rainbow it will use the rainbow.

5. White space. Ask for it out loud. "Generous margins, clear separation between sections." Density is the default failure mode, and dense diagrams are still the thing that needs the most cleanup after generation.

Five parts. Maybe ninety seconds of thinking. It took my infographic turnaround from about 45 minutes of fiddling down to under 10, and the first version is usable more often than not.

Prompt 1: the three stat card layout

This is the workhorse. Quarterly recap, service page header, LinkedIn carousel cover, pitch deck slide. Swap the numbers and it fits almost anything.

Notice what is not in there. No "stunning." No "professional." No "8K." Those words tell the model nothing about your layout. The numerals in quotes, the card count and the margin instruction are doing all the real work.

What actually changes when you get specific

I ran the same brief two ways to show a client the difference. Left side, the version most people would type. Right side, the structured version.

Weak prompt: "Make a modern professional infographic about our company growth with charts and icons, colorful and eye catching."

Same subject. Completely different object. The second one names the reading order, and reading order is the whole game.

Prompt 2: the process diagram

Service businesses need this one constantly. How it works, three steps, put it on the homepage. I built this prompt for a studio client and I have reused it maybe thirty times since.

The trick with process diagrams is the connector. If you do not describe the line and the arrow direction, you get three floating circles with no relationship between them. Ask for the line. Every time.

Prompt 3: the side by side comparison

Comparison graphics convert. They also go wrong fast, because the model wants to make both sides visually equal when the whole point is that one side wins.

See the line about the right panel being visually stronger? That is the sentence that saves the graphic. You are telling it where the eye should land.

Where the model still needs a designer

Let me be straight about this, because the hype is exhausting.

Short text renders beautifully now. Dense text does not always survive. Anything with more than roughly forty words on the canvas is worth a careful read before you send it anywhere. Long labels crowd, small type occasionally garbles, and a chart that looks right at thumbnail size can fall apart at full resolution.

So my workflow is layered. I generate the layout, read every word at 100%, and if a label is wrong I either regenerate with tighter copy or drop the image into my editor and fix the type properly. For anything going to print, the type gets rebuilt in vector regardless. That is not a workaround. That is just finishing the job.

Where it genuinely earns its place is the first eighty percent. Frequently Asked Questions

Can ChatGPT render accurate text inside an infographic?

Yes, for short text. Since the Images 2.0 update in April 2026, English text renders at roughly 99% accuracy. Put the exact wording in quotation marks and keep individual labels short. Very dense text blocks still deserve a proofread before you publish.

Will it calculate my data for me?

No, and you would not want it to. An image model draws what you give it. Work out your numbers first, then write them into the prompt inside quotes. Anything it produces without a source is decoration, not data.

What resolution should I ask for?

2K output is enough for web, social and most digital use. For print, generate the layout, then rebuild the type and any critical charts as vector in your editor. It is faster than it sounds once you have the composition locked.

How many data points fit in one infographic?

Three to five, honestly. Every time I have pushed past six the graphic stopped being read and started being scrolled past. If you have ten things to say, that is two infographics.

Do I need design experience for these prompts to work?

Not for the copy-and-run versions. But knowing what to change matters. Start by only editing the quoted text and the accent color, keep the structure, and you will get consistent results without touching a design tool.

If you take one thing from this: stop prompting subjects and start prompting layouts. Format, hierarchy, exact text, limited palette, white space. That is the entire method, and it works whether you are a designer with fifteen years in or someone who just needs one decent graphic for a proposal by Thursday.
